Biography Hi my name is Frank, my wife Karen and I live in Shrub Oak New York in Westchester County. We have 2 cats and 2 grown children that are married and on their own. While Shrub Oak is a small village 50 miles north of NYC we are influenced because so many people commute there for work.

I was a firefighter and outdoor licensed guide for 30 years and now retired. I still hike, walk and go fishing when I can. While I cooked at the firehouse for years it was not challenging enough, although I burnt many a meal because of calls.

About 18 months ago I started to experiment with bread baking and found out that it is hard to get good artisan bread correct. I tried many recipes including No-knead breads, while good they were not exactly what I was looking for in good bread.

About a year ago I found a book by Peter Crust & Crumb in my local library. After trying a few of his recipes, they took me back to a simpler time. My Dad would bring home Sunday Dinner Bread from the bakeries in the Bronx (NYC) where I grew. Many of these breads came from an area of the Bronx that we called Arthur Avenue. This is the Little Italy of the Bronx.

Eating all the different ethnic breads (Sour Ryes, Pumpernickels and Peasant Bread) of my youth I realized how hard it is to get good bread away from the urban areas. Our chooses when I first move here 40 years ago was Wonder bread or a brand called Entenmann's a Wonder Bread knock off. My wife worked at a local bakery years ago that closed for lack of support from the local community. Now a days there are 3 local bakeries and everyone one of the mega marts have a good bakery section with artisan breads.
While I can purchase good breads now, I find a certain satisfaction making great breads correctly.
